Almost all of a PDF’s size comes from images rather than text, which is why compression transforms a scanned or photo-heavy document but barely touches a text-only one. When you compress here, embedded images are re-encoded and downsampled to a sensible screen resolution. The trade-off is that a heavily compressed scan can look softer when you zoom in or print it at full size, so if quality matters, keep the original and use the smaller copy only for email or the web.

A practical rule: size for the destination, not for the smallest possible number. If the file is an email attachment, aim to land comfortably under the recipient’s limit — commonly 25 MB on Gmail, or 10 MB on many corporate mail servers — rather than squeezing out every last kilobyte. Over-compressing to save a few hundred KB usually costs more in legibility than it is worth.
